Chettri to accompany Odafa upfront!

The transfer season could not go any better for Bagan fans this year. Recruiting Odafa had already put the cat among the pigeons for the other teams in the I League and now to add to their woes, Sunil Chettri after his stint with the Kansas City Wizards, in the MLS, has joined to reinforce the Bagan forward line with the likes of Jose Ramirez Barreto and Odafa Okili.
Sheer fear is installed in the hearts of any defender at the mere name of Odafa and / or Jose Ramirez Barreto and this season Bagan officials have made sure that their will be no dearth of fire power in the team by adding Sunil Chettri to the side. The national team striker will return to Kolkata on the 29th of this month.
This will be the home coming for the talented India striker who during his teens was first seen playing for Mohun Bagan in local leagues and National League and had managed to make 18 first team appearance and score as many as 8 goals between 2002 to 2005 before moving to JCT Mills.
The Delhi born boy managed to impress the recruiters of Kansas City Wizards and had signed a deal in 2010 that saw him spending the year in the American league. He came to serve the nation in the Asia Cup and later in 2011 signed a half season contract with United sports club and scored 7 goals in 7 appearances.

In their hunt for a foreign coach, Bagan officials have successfully managed to rope in the the 56-year old former Thailand U23 national team assistant coach Stephen David Darby better known as Steve Darby who is also well known throughout Asia as a pundit
for ESPN Star Sports.

Gourmangi well into the Bagan net!

Bagan club officials confirmed today that after picking the most sought after striker in the I league, Odafa Okili, they have had their eyes set on the Indian National team defender Gourmangi Singh for quite some time.
Keeping in mind the difficulties the team had to face owing to the lack of an experienced back line for the better half of the last season, club officials have gone all out to rope in the Manipuri centre back, who had won the AIFF player of the year, 2010. He is one of the few Indian players who has been consistent throughout his entire career. Gourmangi has attracted clubs like Melbourne Hearts with his defensive skills.
The prospect of Gourmangi coming into backline which has Anwar Ali and Surkumar Singh does not seem surprising at all and the trio shall be able to settle down quite easily having played for India together on a number of occasions.
Gourmangi's agent was seen around the Bagan tent a few days back, giving rise to speculations that the Manipuri had already signed for the Calcutta giants. On an interview today, the club officials cleared the air by saying that no such contracts have yet been signed with Gourmangi.
However they stated that they have been in talks with the centre back for some time now and are trying to sort out a few issues which they hope will be cleared in a few days time and they will be successful in enabling the defender to wear the Bagan jersey for the second time in his life. Last time he had dawned the Green and Maroon jersey he was a youngster passing out of Tata Football Academy. However he had failed to impress the then club officials before moving to Dempo in 2004.

Bagan bang 5 into East Bengal goal! Chidi alone 4!

Chidi, Chidi, Chidi, Chidi...a name that will no doubt give nightmares to any East Bengal fan for the years to come. A name that wrecked havoc to the East Bengal defense and hammered 4 goals alone in Mohun Bagan's 5-3 triumph over their arch rivals East Bengal. Manish Mathani scored the other goal for Bagan.
East Bengal went ahead through Nirmal Chettri from a corner in the 8th minute. Bagan never seemed down and out and pushed forward and soon got the equaliser. A brilliant run down the right flank by Surkumar, went past Govin Singh's challanges and played a minus to Chidi. Chidi calmly placed the ball past the East Bengal custodian.
East Bengal though tried to controll the game, it never seemed they could establish their say and soon from a lovely ball played in by Snehashih and then Barreto, Chidi missed a chance and fell to Manish, who took a screamer which deflected off Avra Mondal's chest and into the goal.East Bengal after the second goal seemed like a ship with its rudder.Soon Bagan piled on the third goal. Lovely little chip centre from Barreto and Chidi heads it into the East Bengal goal.Just moments later Bagan conceded a silly goal due to a misunderstanding between Shilton and Surkumar.East Bengal, suddenly after this goal exerted themselves and suddenly they seemed more a formidable side; and just moments before the half time interval, from a free kick Yakubu scored the qualiser. 3-3
The second half began and within 30 seconds, Bagan were up in front again.Snehashish's centre was met by a diving header at the second post by James Singh, and the header found Chidi, who slammed the ball into an open goal.
Barreto however, who was suffering from an injury aggravated it during the match and had to be taken off. Barreto left the field in tears and Ishfaq was just the man at that moment, one who would run after the ball and slam into the opposition and not let them settle down. East Bengal tried to capitalise on the situation, but the final nail in the coffin was driven when Chidi scored his fourth goal and Bagan's 5th from a curling corner from Marcos. Chidi headed in the 5th and final goal.
After that what followed was Marcos's experience and Karim's strategy, which literally closed all gates of hopes for East Bengal as Bagan went shutters down.Marcos in the second half played more of a role of a CDM and that really helped tighten up the defense.
